Looking for a WPS format in Excel that you can actually use on a project? This free WPS template follows the structure of ASME Section IX form QW-482, prints cleanly on one A4 width, and keeps the same header and sign-off layout as the rest of the WeldDocPro formats – so your procedure documents look consistent from the first page.
- One Excel workbook (.xlsx), no macros, opens in Excel and Google Sheets
- Header with contractor and client logo areas, project, PO, WPS number, revision and supporting PQR numbers
- All variable groups from QW-402 to QW-410
- Electrical table with heat input column, plus a Prepared / Reviewed / Approved block
- Free to use on your projects – format no. WDP-WLD-F-001

How to fill in the WPS format
- Start from your PQR. Every essential variable you enter must be within the range the PQR qualifies.
- Fill the header with the WPS number, revision and supporting PQR number(s).
- Calculate the ranges – base metal thickness, deposited thickness per process, P-numbers – from the PQR using the ASME IX tables.
- Complete the electrical table layer by layer, and add heat input when impact testing applies.
- Review and sign, then submit for client or TPI approval if the project needs it.
For a full walk-through of every section, read How to prepare a WPS as per ASME Section IX. If the terms are new, start with WPS vs PQR vs WPQ.
Tips for a WPS that passes review
- Use P-numbers and F-numbers, not only material grades – reviewers check those first.
- Keep amperage and travel speed ranges realistic around the PQR values; very wide ranges invite questions.
- When impact tests apply, show heat input and make sure it does not exceed the PQR.
- Take preheat from the construction code and client specification, not from an old WPS.
- Keep the WPS in a WPS / PQR register and issue only controlled copies.
WPS format vs a full procedure package
This free format gives you the WPS sheet. On a real project, the WPS sits inside a bigger set: the PQR, the welder qualifications, the weld log that links every joint to a WPS and welder, and the ITP that says when the WPS is checked. Our ITP pack and Weld Log & Welder Continuity Tracker cover those, and the document library shows every format with a free preview.
Frequently asked questions
Is this WPS format free to use?
Yes. You can download it, add your logo and use it on your own projects. Please do not resell the blank format.
Is the QW-482 layout mandatory?
No. QW-482 is a suggested format in ASME Section IX. Any layout is acceptable if it covers all the required variables – this format follows the QW-482 structure so reviewers find everything quickly.
Does this format work for AWS D1.1 or ISO 15614?
The variable groups are written for ASME Section IX. You can use the layout for other codes, but check the variables and terms against the code you work to.
Can you prepare the WPS for me?
Yes. Our WPS from PQR service prepares WPSs from your qualified PQRs, checks every essential variable and delivers them in your format.
This format is a template. Ranges must be supported by your own qualified PQR(s), and the final WPS must comply with the current code edition and your client specification.
